Coconut Palms

Cocos nucifera

Availability: 1-3ft GW, 18-20ft ​ [Field Grown]

​

Characteristics: Large palm tree. Pinnate leaves. Typically smooth trunk. Highly salt tolerant. Typically can yield 30-75 coconuts per year.

​

Uses: Tropical, coastal accent palm.

​

Did you know: Coconut can mean the whole palm, the seed, or the fruit. The name comes from the Old Portuguese or Spanish words meaning "head" or "skull". One of the most useful trees in the world. Virtually every part of the coconut can be used by humans in some matter.

Characteristics: Beautiful, elegant tree. Small to medium size tree. Gives a nice symmetrical canopy. Naturally rounded crown and fern-like foliage. Moderate grower. No need to trim for shape. Evergreen.

​

Uses: Great as a small shade tree near a deck or patio. Driveway and yard accent tree. Backdrop to a flowerbed.

​

Did you know: Although its called a Japanese Fern Tree, it's neither a fern nor Japanese. It's originally form India and tropical east asia.

Shady Lady Black Olive

Availability: 12-15ft [Filed Grown]

​

Characteristics: Evergreen tree. May grow up to 50ft. Tiny yellow beige flowers in Spring. Not showy but attractive to bees. Oval reddish brown small fruit in clusters. Not edible for humans but birds eat them. Fast growing. Adapts very well to the South Florida environment. Grows in layered tiers creating a horizontal canopy.

Uses: Great as a specimen or lawn tree, to plant along streets without sidewalks.

​

Did you know: Native to South America and the Caribbean. Inconclusive to whether it's native to Florida. Litter from the tree contains tannins which may stain.

Availability: 12-15ft, 6'-8' Spread  &  16-26ft  [Field Grown]

Characteristics: Florida Native. Evergreen. Grows on shorelines in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Thrives in high temperatures. Long branching multi-trunk with long green leaves. Fruits are button-like from which the name derives.

 

Uses: Great for South Florida conditions. Salt tolerant. Full sun. Low maintenance. Ideal for seaside planting, alkaline soil and wet conditions.

​

Did you know: It grows native to Florida and can be found in the mangroves and in the Everglades. Makes high quality charcoal. It's wood is sometimes used in cabinets and in firewood to smoke meats as it burns hot and slow.

Characteristics: Florida Native. Evergreen. Grows on shorelines in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Thrives in high temperatures. Long branching multi-trunk with long green leaves. Fruits are button-like from which the name derives. Fast grower.

 

Uses: Makes a great hedge. Great for South Florida conditions. Salt tolerant. Full sun. Low maintenance. Ideal for seaside planting, alkaline soil and wet conditions.

Did you know: It grows native to Florida and can be found in the mangroves and in the Everglades. Widely believed to be fodder for the African Buffalo.

Pandanus Utilis

Availability: 8-12ft New Crop, 16-25ft [Field Grown]

​

Characteristics: Palm-like evergreen tree. Found in tropical areas. Upright trunk with many horizontal branches. Full graceful heads. Striking exotic tree. Slow to moderate growth rate. High aerosol salt tolerance. Pest resistant. Not a true pine tree. The male plant has conspicuous fragrant flowers, while female plants have globular fruits that hang 8 to 9 inches from chords.​

Uses: Beautiful specimen tree.

​

Did you know: Pandanus' leaves are edged with small red spines. These leaves are used to make matts and baskets in the tropics. Native to Madagascar.

​

Characteristics: Flowering tree. Evergreen. Slow growing. Drought and wind tolerant. Produces a brilliant yellow flower. Erects a slender straight trunk. It has a dense crown and a large canopy. The leaves are shiny dark green.

​

Uses: Specimen tree, accent tree, or shade tree. Small yard or parks.

​

Did you know: Native to Colombia and Venezuela. Related to Lignum Bitae trees. Also know as Maracaibo Lignum. First introduced to US by David Fairchild.
